HERE, at ART 836 / G Gallery

Opening 22nd March, 2016 at 9pm

Exhibition will be on till 8th April, 2016, Tuesday to Saturday, from 6 pm to 10 pm.

London-based artists Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead originally conceived Here in 2011 as a virtual image for The Mini Museum of XXI Century Arts, an online digital media platform. The concept was to mark the distance of the work from itself along a North/South axis. The physical sculpture, fabricated to UK road standards two years later, marks the 24,859 mile distance around the earth and back (i.e. the longitudinal diameter of Earth). The current placement of this sculpture is particularly relevant in its current location on the Greenwich Meridian, which is located at 0 degrees.

‘Here’ was first made into this open edition digital photographic artwork for THE MINI MUSEUM OF XXI CENTURY ARTS in March 2011: a traveling musuem/digital media display originated by Italian curator Domenico Quaranta. This version of the work, developed by the artists, is a digital jpeg image file intended solely for display on screen.

Presentation of the world smallest supercomputer / My name is Ivan and I build supercomputers in my spare time

Join us at Hacklab 01 for an interesting Upgrade!Zagreb gathering. We will present Parallella board and play a bit with it. Presenters will be Vedran Gligo and Ivan Krpan.

The Parallella platform is an open source, energy efficient, high performance, credit-card sized computer based on the Epiphany multicore chips developed by Adapteva. This affordable platform is designed for developing and implementing high performance, parallel processing applications developed to take advantage of the on-board Epiphany chip. The Epiphany 16 or 64 core chips consists of a scalable array of simple RISC processors programmable in C/C++ connected together with a fast on chip network within a single shared memory architecture.

The 66-core version of the Parallella computer delivers over 90 GFLOPS on a board the size of a credit card while consuming only 5 Watts under typical work loads. For certain applications, this would provide more raw performance than a high end server costing thousands of dollars and consuming 400W.

When Adapteva launched “$99 Parallella project” on  Kickstarter in 2012, the goal was to “democratize access to supercomputing”. With a $99 price point, they knew that they would not make a profit, but they figured the value of reaching the whole world with our technology was enough of a reward for Adapteva as a company. With over 8,500 boards shipped to 75 countries (and over 150 Universities), that is for certain a great start!

During presentation, we will show how to mount OS and few interesting applications for Parallella. Free entrance!

Alexandra Reill – Presentation of the book written entirely on FB platform:

7th june 2013 at 7 pm at Booksa book club, Martićeva 14d, Zagreb

“WB: quoting Walter Benjamin”

A print compilation and real-time performance reflecting the contemporary relevance of the media theorist and philosopher Walter Benjamin.
The structure of facebook as a social networking tool and magazine with decentralized notes, essays and media publications, in a mixture of private and public statements coming from all kinds of content fields, enhanced the concept of short daily updating and interactive communication to collectively create an associative publication on life and oeuvre of Walter Benjamin.
The book serves as the central requisite of the audiovisual real-time performance. People raise their voice as well as media stations, and there is an interplay between media and human voices. In a mixture of reading, discussion and interactive performance correlations between relevant factors and opportunities for development of democracy in the context of the
information age, globalization, Capitalism and Marxism are reflected together – on the basis of the work of Walter Benjamin. Wo/man learns options and limits of self-determination, options and limits of scopes of action. Technology serves wo/man, and only a framework, only a context is given, in which each moment is designed differently – a moment which Walter
Benjamin described as the Angelus Novus: the space where past and future coincide and where not ideas shape presence but where presence emerges.

More info on:
http://www.kanonmedia.com/portfolio/publications/benjamin_paris.html

In the years 2010-2012, Alexandra Reill developed a trilogy of interactive media enactmens reflecting the contemporary relevance of life and oeuvre of Walter Benjamin, Hans Richter and Bertolt Brecht in an information age digitizing itself in manifold ways and at the same time struggling with turbulent economic difficulties. Besides Tribute to WB, Alexandra Reill will present also two more pieces from her interactive trilogy: Tribute to Hans Richter and Blessed Simonida.

Alexandra Reill, born in Vienna, is a conceptual and media artist and works as a filmmaker in documentary film; she invests her work with socio-cultural themes, examining the societal and sociological repercussions of digitalization and the information age for human identities. Her experimental visual worlds and live compositions as much as her performances are often participative and characterized by rhythmic and cineastic dramaturgies and the conscious employment of associative formal language, combining interactive technologies and participative communicational approaches in off- and online
 settings.

Selection of projects:

2008 / 2012 / 2013 – Nelkengasse: a documentary film and portrait of Heinz
Moldau who was forced to flee with his family from Nelkengasse in Vienna in 1938.

2012 – Tribute to Hans Richter: interactive real-time media performance
honouring life and work of one of the first filmmakers.

2012 Blessed Simonida from the Brilliant Grounds: interactive real-time performance, following Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards.

2009-2010 / 2011 – #WB: quoting Walter Benjamin: publication and participative media performance reflecting the relevance of the media theorist and philosopher Walter Benjamin today.

2008 / 2009 / 2010 – Would We Say No?: communication project in the streets of Vienna reflecting attitudes toward work in fascist times and today.

2008 Home Sweet Home: documentary film on [auto]biographic tracking of fascist traces in four post-war generations of a “majority society” in Vienna.

2006-2008 – Art Following the Trend? Artists′ Voices: interviews, publication and a study on the functions of artists in society.

2004 – founding of THARA, first competence center for Roma and
Sinti in Vienna. Several experimental short films and interactive installations on time and space.

2001 – S.P.I.N.Y., an interactive feature film on CD, first production of this kind funded by MEDIA in Austria.

2000-2003 – save / safe: post-wiki and publication on borderlining as a
symptom of contemporary conditioning, Deserts & Backbones: documentary film on religion and free will.

1985-1995 set and costume design for stage and film.

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency created by the pseudonymous entity Satoshi Nakamoto. It is subdivided into 100-million smaller units called satoshis. It is the most widely used alternative currency, with the total money supply valued at over 100 million US dollars.

Bitcoin has no central issuer; instead, the peer-to-peer network regulates Bitcoins’ balances, transactions and issuance according to consensus in network software. Bitcoins are issued to various nodes that verify transactions through computing power; it is established that there will be a limited and scheduled release of no more than 21 million coins, which will be fully issued by the year 2140.
Bitcoin is administered through a decentralized peer-to-peer network. Cryptographic technologies and the peer-to-peer network of computing power enables users to make and verify irreversible, instant online Bitcoin payments, without an obligation to trust and use centralized banking institutions and authorities. Dispute resolution services are not made directly available. Instead it is left to the users to verify and trust the parties they are sending money to through their choice of methods. Internationally, Bitcoins can be exchanged and managed through various websites and software along with physical banknotes and coins.

How to be a part of an alternative independent financial network, how to be an international bank with the help of graphic card, how to make some money, and how to change the world? All that you can find out at the Vjekoslav’s lecture about crypto currency and Bitcoin technology.

Vjekoslav Radišić –  Born in 1978. Lives and works in Beli Manastir. Activist, entrepreneur and dog owner.
Besides participating in different citizens initiatives, he researches new technologies which are empowering human freedom, as are crypto-currencies and DIY 3d printing. He also practicises and believes in learning through coaching.

“Electronic creatures”
(self-willed, autonomous and analog electronic)

People are used to vitalize the world around them and put the
attributes of human beings into technical artifacts. It is fascinating
to watch or even “communicate” with “life like” machines. The simplest
way to create and build “life like” machines or robots is by the use
of analogue oscillator circuits. Oscillations can be fed-back and as
result simple interactions happen and the behaviour of simple neuronal
networks can be simulated. In this workshop the participants can build
various simple “life like” machine, which will generate small
movements or tiny and various sound patterns, that allude to birds or
insect sounds. Furthermore the participants become familiar with the
special aesthetic of minimal powered high sensitive electronic
circuits.

day 1 / friday April 20th

CONCEPT
DJs / VJs / WJs

WJ-S is a software and a flexible public device for web performances allowing WJs (webjays, artists, curators, web addicts, web mutants…) to play live with online text,  sound and visual… WJs take  the  control  of  a multiscreens  environment  and  surf at distance in  different browser  windows simultaneously.  WJ-S  is  a  visible  and  collective  experience  of  the  surf.  WJ-S  is  an  immersive experience in the flux.

Following the steps of DJs and VJs, WJs (weejays, webjays, webjockeys …) directly draw their sources from the Web and mix the network flow in real time. The WJ-S/essions are organized indoors or outdoors in a public space, in front of an audience..

Taking out the network from the web

As it is often related to a solitary adventure led in a very intimate relationship with one’s machine, the virtual experience is seldom extended to another dimension of time-space. Projects involving network actors mostly take place in closed circles, within the network, and hardly ever outside, within a live performance environment.

The idea of the WJ-S project is to disrupt this tendency by offering a public surf where the feeling of being immerged in the flow and the pleasure of browsing are shifted to a live performance environment. Individual and collaborative online productions (in different geographical sites) become collective events (to which an audience is invited).

The web as a medium / the web a giant hard disk

WJ-s/essions make it possible to handle online contents (texts, sound, video, animations…) coming directly from the web, this giant hard disk.

The widened, shared and liberated opening of context creates a sensitive and lively situation that allows the full potential of scenography, writing, forms, combinations and practices to arise and flourish.  The contexts generated in this way develop mobile dynamic display and hybridization.

The multiscreens projection system is a reduced model of the internet, a metaphor of its codes and of the way information flows and appears on the network.

Different WJ-S productions

The WJ-S productions can take many forms : performances, demos, presentations of projects, , parties, workshops, conferences… The WJ-S productions are specifically related to the network’s activity, they can be works in progress, unique or original actions The themes revolve around transmission, communication, dialogue, sharing, open and wide distribution, personal experience, experiments, history, processes and issues of the network.

The artists   (the webjays)

According to the themes and the contexts of the events where the project is presented, the international media artists, famous or emergent, are selected in collaboration with the cultural operators

Webjays explore and experiment with the changing and fluctuating territories of the Internet. They subjectively articulate its intimate contours and zones. They play with an exacting choice of plastic, graphical, sensitive, political, social, aesthetic and narrative works they select on the realm of theweb… Webjays become flux stalkers offering things to see, hear, feel, observe and think about, through progressive and dynamic processes. Guided by their critical spirit and their own personal outlook, Webjays reveal the fragrance of the Web, defragment and confront worlds that make the invisible become visible.

Hundreds of artists and art students have already participated to the WJ-S project, among them : Isabelle Arvers, Sylvie Astiè, Jean-Baptiste Bayle, Lucille Calmel, Agnès de Cayeux, KRN, Olga Kisseleva, Anne Laforet, Jérôme Joy, Marika Dermineur, Jérôme Joy, Mia Makela, Antoine Schmitt, Janez Jansa, Igor Stromajer…

If we really want to reshape our urban way of life on a sustainable and ecological basis, we will have to take tangible measures. But how and where can we create green oases in the concrete jungles of our towns? On the window ledge, the balcony or the rooftop?

The multimedia artist and activist Annemie Maes will give us some answers and practical tips. She has long been involved in eco-technologies and grass-roots activism. In 2004, she and Guy van Belle set up OKNO, an artists collective that aims to develop innovative cultural projects linking art and technology. For example: Connected Open Greens – the outskirts of town where culture and nature can come together symbiotically, where regenerative energy technologies meet traditional gardening and where art projects might make new biotopes. The question is this: to what extent can new organisms, new surroundings and new landscapes be generated by merging the artificial with the natural?

OKNO members operate two Open Green Rooftop Gardens in Brussels. They observe and record the growth, flowering and decay of plants as well as providing a habitat for insects and keeping bee colonies.
In Zagreb, Annemie Maes will be talking about the Connected Open Greens project, one feature of which is urban bee-keeping.

MishMashMe is a cross-media project about identity and personal connections in a globalised world. All of us are included in an ever-growing network, but how does this change YOUR life? Do you think our world is really coming closer together?

4 filmmakers and 1 blogger from Berlin go on a journey around the world to shoot a documentary and to connect people in a different way: Inside our custom-made caravan we carry an interactive installation. It collects and combines people from various cultural, geographical, religious and personal backgrounds. With the help of pink sticky-notes*, people can mix themselves up with me, your neighbour, – creating a collage of themselves and find out how it would feel to be someone else.

The purpose of this journey is to meet you in person & mishmash you up.

LUDBREG – Centrum Mundi
Or
Europe as canvas of concentric circles painted
by connecting artists and their settings

Collaborative Artistic Project funded by European Cultural Foundation

By

CSDVA – Croatia
Artenativa – Croatia
Kanonmedia – Austria
Line – Initiative and Movement – FYR Macedonia

In this project, the involved organizations from Croatia, Macedonia and Austria will be setting in motion coextensively the real space travels and online connections from the “Center of Europe – Centrum Mundi – Ludbreg’’ to the different places all across the Europe. Those movements will be recorded and then transformed into custom-made application for online viewing. The project has an aim to form new connections between artists and cultural organizations from participating European places and document new urban diversity.
The inspiration for this project, the place Ludbreg is small, in wider public not so well known place in Croatia, and yet it is one of the oldest settlements in Croatia. According to ancient legend from the Roman times, it was in Ludbreg that the circles of the Earth were thought up and drawn. All the larger metropolises are found on the circumferences of the circles, and it is in Ludbreg that the four elements – earth, water, fire and air – meet. In Croatia it is known as The Centre of the World.
The small Podravina Township evolved on the intersection of trade roads leading from East to West, and from South to North, all crossing the river Bednja. Illirians and Kelts passed these roads, as well as Tatars and Turks. On this place, prehistoric augurs predicted the future, Slavik sages brought their offerings, Roman patricians enjoyed the beauties of nature. It was the importance of these ancient roads spreaded through this region since the first millenium BC, which brought old Romans to settle here. Between years 6 and 9 AD they built a monumental fortress named IOVIO. By the fortress, a settlement was raised with time, whose inhabitants worked with and for the Roman army. Old Romans, appreciating the good geographic position, built Castrum Iovia in the place of today’s Ludbreg. It was a town equipped with complete infrastructure, a roman forum and termae (baths), which quickly became an economic and transportation center, and upon whose foundations Ludbreg as we know it today was later built. From that time origins the legend saying that from this place “rims of the world” were drawn, and all the large world centres built upon them…

Maja Petrić is an artist and predoctoral associate at the University of Washington’s Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media (DXARTS). She holds a Masters degree in new media art from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Interactive Telecommunications Program and Masters degree in journalism from University of Zagreb, Croatian Studies.

Her work explores methods of manipulating spatial experience in function of art. Through transformative spatial experiences, she aims to create new opportunities for accessing the sublime – transcendent qualities, whether physical, emotional, intellectual, metaphysical or artistic. By means of experimentation with both technology and traditional materials, she creates spatial installations for facilitating new interpretations and incarnations of the sublime.

Her approach to invention and exploration of new forms in digital and experimental art combines principles of architecture, lighting design, audiovisual systems, multisensory devices, electrical, mechanical and software engineering.

Umjetnica Maja Petrić trenutno radi kao znanstvena novakinja na doktorskom studiju Centra za digitalnu umjetnost i eksperimentalne medije (DXARTS) Sveučilišta Washington. Završila je magistarske studije na sveučilištima u New Yorku i Zagrebu. Na njujorškoj Tisch School of Arts na studiju nove medijske umjetnosti magistrirala je program interaktivnih telekomunikacija, a na zagrebačkim Hrvatskim studijima novinarstvo.

Njezin rad istražuje razne metode manipuliranja prostornim iskustvom u svrhu umjetnosti.

U istraživanju i osmišljavanju novih oblika digitalne i eksperimentalne umjetnosti, u svojevrsnom spoju kombinirana su rješenja arhitekture, dizajna svjetla, audiovizualnih sustava, multisenzornih uređaja, električnog, mehaničkog i softverskog inženjerstva.

3rd Upgrade!International meeting

The meeting theme Chain Reactionillustrates the network itself, the way it works and functions, correlates and interacts. The Upgrade!International started as a creative spark that gradually grew into an international group of nodes influencing each other continually through permanent communication. The meeting gathers Upgrade! nodes into one core event in Macedonia and will hopefully cause a positive chain reaction. Upgrade! network gathers annually or bi-annually, each time in a different city for a festival by artists who participated in the Upgrade! meetings around the world.

“Chain reaction” was initiated by 5 partner nodes (Upgrade! Belgrade, Upgrade! Berlin – Public Art Lab, Upgrade! Sofia – InterSpace, Upgrade! Istanbul – NOMAD and Upgrade! Skopje – Line Initiative and Movement) that are responsible for the main coordination and communication of the project with other nodes from the network.

The outcome of the meeting is a 4 day festival with various activities that are created by common effort of the Upgrade! International nodes. On this occasion 50 international artists, curators, and arts producers will gather in Skopje to meet, present art projects and further develop the network. The artistic program of this project is rich, diverse and presents the latest developments of the new media scene on international level.

The artistic program comprises 6 parts:

+ Exhibition

+ Public interventions

+ Live a/v performances

+ Performances

+ Screening program

+ Workshops

These events will take place in different cultural spaces in the city centre. The vibrancy created by having the event happening throughout the city also serves to increase the opportunity for dialogue and place-making, letting the city and its people become part of the festival.

One major aim of the Upgrade! International 2008 meeting is to establish new forms of cultural exchange among the neighbouring countries in the Balkans. The partner nodes in the Balkans are working to show that culture continues to be a powerful force for regional cooperation. The nodes have already hosted smaller exchanges amongst themselves and have worked in a peer-to-peer mentorship capacity to help start and support new nodes in the area. This cooperation has allowed the organizers and local participants to foster a sense of confidence and unique identity amongst new media practitioners internationally. Due to our limited opportunities for mobility and cultural activism on a European and international level, the meeting in Skopje will be of great importance for the region. It’s an outstanding opportunity for many of the local cultural operators, artists, and curators to increase their knowledge and experiences and to share their expertise with others. Hosting the international meeting in Skopje in partnership with neighbouring nodes is a step forward towards creating ongoing cultural linkages in the Balkans.
